What is my savings bond worth?

A savings bond’s redemption value is the amount assigned to it for the selected month. It differs from the denomination printed on a paper certificate: a $100 paper EE bond originally cost $50, while a $100 I bond cost $100. Read the issue price alongside interest earned to see how the value is made up.

Choose the series printed on your bond, its denomination and its issue month and year. Use the issue date, rather than the date someone gave it to you. “Value as of” lets you inspect a past month as well as today. Values change on accrual dates, so a particular day within a month does not require a separate calculation.

The result identifies its source and final maturity date. Interest earned is the displayed value less the purchase price; it is not an annual yield or a tax calculation. When the early redemption penalty applies, the displayed value already excludes the last three months of interest. Do not subtract that amount again.

How savings bonds earn interest

Series EE: terms depend on the issue date. Issues from May 2005 use their original fixed rate for the first 20 years, with a guarantee that value reaches twice the purchase price at 20 years. Earlier issues follow different rates and guarantee dates. The EE Bond Calculator separates those periods and includes $100 examples by year.

Series I: a lifetime fixed rate combines with an inflation component that changes every six months. An individual holding switches rates on its own schedule, counted from the issue month. Use the I Bond Calculator for a holding; I Bond Rates shows announced rates for new issues.

Series E and Savings Notes: these discontinued series have reached final maturity. Their value is fixed, even if you still hold the certificate. Series E sold at 75% of face value; Savings Notes sold at 81%. Neither earns the current rate for a new EE or I bond.

Bonds that have stopped earning

Final maturity stops interest accumulation. It does not automatically redeem a paper certificate. EE and I stop after 30 years. Series E issues through November 1965 earned for 40 years; later issues and Savings Notes earned for 30. The Savings Bond Checker explains the date rules and links to official redemption procedures.

Keep several bonds together

“Add to list” keeps a row for the selected bond. Add each certificate separately when you want separate rows. The list shows total value and purchase price. Remove a row, clear the list, download a CSV or print the page. It stays in this browser and does not transfer to another device. If local storage is blocked, the list works for the current visit and tells you it could not be saved.

No serial number, owner name or account login is needed. The Privacy Policy describes local storage and exports.

Official calculator and this calculator

This independent site uses Treasury’s published value files. TreasuryDirect operates the official paper calculator and your official electronic account. Our calculation methodology includes sources, real comparison records and limitations when files are late. Confirm a value with TreasuryDirect before redemption.

Questions about your bond

Where is the issue date on a paper savings bond?

Look for the issue month and year printed on the certificate. Use that date for the calculation, even if the bond was received as a gift later. The serial number is a different field and is not needed here. Check an unclear or damaged certificate directly with TreasuryDirect.

Does a paper bond keep earning after final maturity?

A savings bond stops accumulating interest at final maturity. Keeping the certificate longer does not add interest afterward. The bond may still be redeemed through its applicable official process. Use the maturity status to understand the date, then follow TreasuryDirect’s instructions for your particular series and ownership situation.

Can I save my bond list on another computer?

The list stays in the local storage of the browser where you created it. It is not sent to a server and does not sync with another computer. Download a CSV to keep your own copy. Clearing browser data or using a private session can remove the locally saved list.
